Life Lessons Learned From Brooklyn 99

Fans of Brooklyn 99 love the show for a number of reasons. Sure, it entertains and makes us laugh, but it provides so much more in the process. Here are three of the many life lessons we learned from watching Brooklyn 99.

Work hard and never let anyone stand in the way of your goals. Captain Holt certainly faced more than his fair share of adversity on the force. As an openly gay black cop he had just about ever obstacle imagined thrown at him by a homophobic police force but he worked hard, he got results, and became the Captain that we all know and love.

Sometimes opposites really do attract. On paper, Jake and Amy couldn’t be any more different. One plays by the rules, one goes out of his way to break every possible rule, one is nothing short of a kiss up, the other seems to have a problem with authority, and yet they still found themselves madly in love and became one of the best on-screen romances we’ve ever seen.

Family is your greatest and most important asset. Above all else, the 99 is a family. An unconventional and dysfunctional family at times, sure, but a family nonetheless. They help each other, looks out for each other, and work together as a team, making that team the greatest and most important asset each of them will ever have.

Career Defining Comedy Movies

Here are four of the comedies that were career makers for their starring comedians.

The Blues Brothers. John Belushi is one of the many hilarious comics to come up through the ranks of Saturday Night Live, and after his breakthrough performance in Animal House, Belushi, along with fellow SNL alumn Dan Aykroyd, put on a performance that was nothing short of perfect in 1980’s The Blues Brothers. One could only wonder where Belushi’s career would have gone from there had his life not been tragically cut short.

Airplane! Prior to 1980’s Airplane!, Leslie Nielsen was considered a dramatic actor, and a well respected one at that! His poker faced performance in the comedy classic sparked a new start to his career, however, and to this day he’s remembered as a funny man.

The Pink Panther. It was Peter Sellers’ role as the bumbling Inspector Clouseau in 1963’s The Pink Panther that made many call him the Charlie Chaplin of his generation. Despite a Stave Martin remake, the original film still enjoys popularity to this very day.

Groundhog Day. Some would argue that Caddyshack was the true begin of his meteoric rise, but few could forget Bill Murray’s masterful performance in 1993’s Groundhog Day, which served as a gateway to many hilarious films to follow. Thanks in no small part to its unique script, Groundhog Day offered Murray the opportunity to play to his range, with his character going from straight laced and cynical to simply off the wall.

Is Netflix Taking Over Stand up Comedy?

Stand up comedy has been a difficult profession since its inception. Comics would spend years, often decades, paying their dues and performing in small clubs to thankless audiences, dealing with hecklers, and occasionally getting stiffed by club owners and show promoters. While the world of stand up comedy isn’t necessarily getting any easier, it certainly is changing, and much of that change is due in no small part to Netflix.

Before the days of on-demand viewing a television special was considered the holy grail for stand up comics. HBO had positioned themselves as an innovator and industry leader with 40 years worth of experience in the game, but specials were often reserved for a select few. The playing field started opening up thanks to Comedy Central, who for the past two decades have offered the opportunity to lesser known but still hilarious comics.

Enter Netflix. Although they face steep competition and an uphill battle thanks to imitators and licensing rights threatening the loss of existing content, they’re still the biggest player in the game of on-demand content. And with millions of people around the globe flipping through Netflix deciding what to watch, comedians of all kinds have found themselves being discovered exclusively through the service. Add to that the fact that more comedy specials are being produced now than ever before, many of them exclusively for Netflix, and you have the makings of a bid for comedic domination. It’ll be an interesting, if not hilarious, revolution to watch.

Top three Penny & Leonard moments in the Big Bang Theory

The Big Bang Theory may be about many things, but at its core is the relationship between Leonard and Penny. From the first episode Leonard has been in love with his quirky neighbour and through all the years, we’ve watched their relationship bloom. So here are our top three Penny and Leonard moments.

The snowflake

When Leonard comes back from the Arctic, he and Penny aren’t a couple, but even so, he brings her a gift that is so unique and special it’s hard for any guy to top. A snowflake that is perfectly preserved and will last forever. The moment that he hands over the snowflake and Penny says “that’s the romantic thing anyone has ever said to me that I don’t understand”, it has our hearts melting (unlike the snowflake) and rooting for their relationship even more.

When Penny says I love you

It’s not a romantic moment, but it certainly is a real one. Leonard is jealous that Penny is working on assignment with a guy from England. Leonard warns the guy that Penny has a boyfriend, and though the English guy doesn’t care – Penny hears everything. Leonard tries to explain why he’s jealous which results in Penny saying “Leonard, why do you always do this? Listen to me, you’re the one I’m with. You know I love you, so will you please relax because you’re driving me crazy.”

When they got married the second time

After running off to Las Vegas to get married on their own, they decide to get married again – this time in front of all their friends and family. Penny gets to finally walk down the aisle and share that wonderful moment of dedicating lives to one another in front of all the people that love them.

The World Mourns Comedian Bob Einstein

The world is in mourning today after news of Bob Einstein’s passing at the age of 76. Perhaps best known for his role as the titular character of the Super Dave tv series, which ran for 5 seasons from 1987-1991, Einstein managed to connect with a new generation of fans through regular appearances in Curb Your Enthusiasm and in season 3 of Arrested Development.

Einstein created the Super Dave Osborne character, a fearless but accident prone daredevil whose stunts would often end in disaster. Super Dave began making appearances on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour as early as the late 1960s before his own show began in 1987.

Alongside writing partner Allan Blye, Einstein won two Emmy awards for comedy writing, the first for The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour in 1969 and the second for Van Dyke and Company in 1977. He also wrote for shows such as Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour and Pat Paulsen's Half a Comedy Hour, and made numerous appearances on late night television.

Born November 20, 1942 in Los Angeles, California, Einstein was the son of actress Thelma Leeds and radio comedian Harry "Parkyakarkus" Einstein. His younger brother and fellow actor Albert Brooks tweeted the news Wednesday, calling Einstein a "brilliantly funny man" who will be "missed forever." Einstein passed away after a battle with leukemia, and will be sorely missed by fans of all ages.
