Why Only Academics

This was a question which I overheard while having dinner with my family in the Fine Dining Restaurant. The family sitting adjacent to our table was having a heated discussion between a father and a son. The mother was quiet and the body language quite obviously conveyed the feeling that she supported the son. He said to his father, “Why Only Academics?” This question rung the bells in the head too and I thought that wasn’t the right. Why should the emphasis always be on studies? Why should parents not look into other avenues in which the child responds with interest?
